How Does the Pituitary Gland Influence the Thyroid?

Category: Thyroid & Holistic View

The pituitary gland plays a crucial role in thyroid function by orchestrating the production of thyroid hormones. It accomplishes this through the secretion of a substance known as thyrotropin. This hormone regulates thyroid hormone production via a negative feedback mechanism.
In this feedback system, if there is an excess of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, the pituitary gland reduces thyrotropin production, effectively slowing down metabolism. Conversely, when there is insufficient thyroid hormone in the bloodstream, the pituitary gland ramps up thyrotropin production to elevate metabolism.
