My Story

My Thyroid Journey: How I Overcame Hypothyroidism

At 38, my thyroid journey began—an unexpected underactive thyroid diagnosis that changed my life. I was ready to embrace motherhood after giving birth to my second son. Then, everything shifted with this diagnosis, and I had to navigate a new reality.

Everyone’s thyroid journey is unique, yet our stories often share common threads. For me, the path was long and winding, taking years to fully understand. Along the way, I became my own health detective. By observing my symptoms, researching extensively, and asking questions, I eventually discovered a solution.

This is the story of how I reclaimed my health:

Becoming My Own Advocate

Determined to find answers, I explored online resources, read books, and consulted multiple doctors about every possible thyroid treatment. I even ordered my own blood tests online, bypassing delays from traditional visits. Receiving the results directly enabled me to ask informed questions and advocate for the treatments that suited me best.

As a mother of two, I expected some hormonal shifts. However, the changes I experienced were overwhelming and altered the course of my life.

Symptoms That Led to My Thyroid Condition

The first sign was my hair. Once thick and shiny, it began falling out in alarming amounts—on the floor, in the shower, and even on my bed. This was only the beginning.

Soon after, my emotional health began to decline. I felt depressed, unmotivated, and disconnected from my former self. My back ached constantly, and despite eating modestly, I gained weight. Socializing became challenging, as my confidence waned.

My energy levels plummeted. Simple tasks, such as preparing meals or driving my children to school, felt insurmountable. Even my memory deteriorated, requiring my husband to leave notes to remind me of essential responsibilities.

Seeking an Underactive Thyroid Diagnosis

Finally, a doctor confirmed I had an underactive thyroid. The prescribed medication, levothyroxine, didn’t relieve my symptoms. I later learned that my body struggled to convert T4 into T3, a hormone crucial for metabolism and energy. This insight explained why standard treatments weren’t effective for me.

Through careful investigation, I identified several factors contributing to my condition:

  1. Dental Fillers: Mercury in amalgam fillings disrupted thyroid function.
  2. Iodine Deficiency: My body couldn’t absorb enough iodine from food, requiring supplementation.
  3. Chlorine Exposure: Long hot tub sessions exposed me to high chlorine levels, affecting my thyroid.
  4. BPA in Plastics: Chemicals in plastic bottles disrupted my endocrine system.
  5. DietaryToxins: Pesticides, antibiotics, and gluten contributed to hormonal imbalances.
  6. Emotional Stress: Caring for aging parents and other stressors destabilized my thyroid.

A Holistic Solution That Works!

Eventually, a holistic doctor prescribed natural thyroid medications derived from pig thyroid glands, providing both T4 and T3. This approach significantly improved my symptoms.

However, my journey didn’t end there. Changes in medication formulations and a traumatic family event—my father’s passing—prompted me to explore additional healing techniques. Practices like yoga, meditation, and energy therapies helped stabilize my thyroid and manage stress effectively.

Finding the Right Balance

Through persistence, I discovered a compounding pharmacy that created a custom medication combining T4 and T3. Gradual dosage adjustments helped stabilize my thyroid levels. Today, my Free T3 is in the optimal range, and my symptoms have disappeared.
